The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecast cold overnight low temperatures through Wednesday morning, February 12, with temperatures in the low to mid 30s, creating hazardous conditions for those without adequate access to heat or shelter. Steady rain is forecast to return throughout the County on Tuesday night through Friday.
OSH is requesting that service providers, partners, and advocates extend their activation through Saturday, February 15, 8:00 AM. Outreach workers, community partners, and volunteers are encouraged to share information about warming centers with vulnerable populations. For up-to-date listings, please click here. Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is offering free rides to individuals traveling to warming centers and shelters along VTA routes.
Cold Weather Tips:
- Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol, non-prescription medication, and other drugs if you will be staying outside as it may lead to death or serious injury
- Unsheltered community members, older adults, children, and those with access and functional needs should seek shelter now as they are at higher risk for hypothermia
- Avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day, or for extended periods of time in extreme cold weather
- Dress in layers, wear a hat, scarf, gloves and mittens, and waterproof, insulated boots to avoid hypothermia or frostbite.
Symptoms of hypothermia include:
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Exhaustion
- Severe shivering
Seek medical attention immediately and call 9-1-1 if you see someone experience hypothermia or frostbite.
